Bachelor of Arts – Event Management Level 7

To work in event management you need an eye for detail and the ability to work across diverse areas including design, sound, project management, financial management, human resources, logistics, public relations and communication.

Throughout your studies you plan events of various sizes and genres. You learn to prepare management plans, create contracts and write plans that help stakeholders evaluate their experience against pre-planned objectives.

Modules

With this major you develop the skills for a career in event management. As part of your degree, you can include courses from related disciplines like business, public relations, hospitality, tourism, psychology, languages, and sport and recreation.

Apart from the courses below you also need to complete courses from your second major, your chosen minor(s) or electives.

Workplace experience
Workplace experience is the final part of your degree and takes a full semester. This is a supervised work placement in an organisation related to event management. Projects you can undertake include competitor analysis, social media networking and promotion, event planning and execution, post-event evaluation, event design and marketing.

What will I learn?

In addition to achieving the broader outcomes of the Bachelor of Arts, a graduate of the Event Management major will be able to:

a. Understand the role of event management in corporate, sport, leisure, recreation, arts and cultural environments. (Knowledge/Understanding)

b. Critique the role that event management plays in local, regional and national economic development. (Inquiry/Research/Creativity)

c. Undertake critical analysis in a wide range of event management situations. (Inquiry/Research/Creativity)

d. Apply appropriate technologies to frame and solve problems and evaluate opportunities in a range of event management settings. (Skills/Application)

e. Apply knowledge of financial management and accounting (including reading and analysing company reports) particularly in relation to small to medium sized businesses. (Skills/Application; Communication)

f. Use project management skills to plan events of various sizes and genres and analyse/critique the outcomes. (Skills/Application; Inquiry/Research/Creativity)

g. Understand and use tools to enhance creativity. (Skills/Application; Inquiry/Research/Creativity)

h. Develop the skills of leadership and understand how they apply to the event management industry. (Knowledge/Understanding; Ethical/Professional Dispositions)

<p>Apply if you:</p>
<ul>
<li>Are under the age of 20 years; and</li>
<li>Are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia; and</li>
<li>Don’t meet the University Entrance standard; and</li>
<li>Have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its equivalent overseas) and completed NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit or better. This should include at least 14 credits in each of 4 NCEA Level 2 subjects, at least 3 of which must be on the approved subject list; and</li>
<li>Meet the UE literacy and numeracy standards, or their equivalents; and</li>
<li>Have not completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school; or</li><br>

<li>Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also be selected into the programme for which they have applied.</li><br>
