The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree.
The Master of Philosophy enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT’s expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

The goals of the Master of Philosophy is to enable a student who has successfully completed approved and supervised research, to:
- Critically investigate an approved topic of substance and significance
- Demonstrate independent thinking
- Demonstrate expertise in the methods of research and scholarship
- Make a significant contribution to the subject area or discipline
- Cogently present scholarly and publishable outcomes
What will I learn?
A graduate of the Master of Philosophy will undertake research and be able to:
a. Initiate, design, conduct, sustain, and report on a research project in a logical and critical manner
b. Critically reflect on and build in-depth understanding of knowledge and professional learning
c. Be self-motivated and demonstrate independent thinking within their field of study
d. Source, analyses, and evaluate information in relation to the philosophical basis, methodologies, and methods of their study
e. Demonstrate expertise in analysis of information using appropriate tools, technologies, and methods
f. Work autonomously, responsibly, and cooperatively with an awareness of integrity, truthfulness, and accountability
g. Consider ethical issues and apply this understanding to the making of ethical decisions in research
<p>Must have completed one of the following with the equivalent of a B grade
average or higher:</p><br>
<ul>
<li>Four-year bachelor’s degree OR</li>
<li>Bachelor’s honor’s degree OR</li>
<li>Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma OR</li>
<li>Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed programme of research</li><br>
<p>An interview may be required for particular research areas.</p><br>
<p>Other requirements</p><br>
<li>May be required to complete an approved research methods course</li></ul><br>
<p>Apply if you:</p>
<ul>
<li>Are under the age of 20 years; and</li>
<li>Are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia; and</li>
<li>Don’t meet the University Entrance standard; and</li>
<li>Have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its equivalent overseas) and completed NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit or better. This should include at least 14 credits in each of 4 NCEA Level 2 subjects, at least 3 of which must be on the approved subject list; and</li>
<li>Meet the UE literacy and numeracy standards, or their equivalents; and</li>
<li>Have not completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school; or</li><br>
<li>Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also be selected into the programme for which they have applied.</li><br>

<p>Cost of applying for Discretionary Entrance There is a non-refundable assessment fee of $50.00.</p><br>

<li>IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.</li><br>

<li>Grading scale for postgraduate qualification</li>

<li>1-2 page document (maximum) outlining your proposed research project</li>
<li>Curriculum vitae (CV)</li>
<li>If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of English Language proficiency – IELTS (Academic) test results or recognized equivalent. If your postgraduate study was completed in English within 3 years, this may be waived</li>
</p>Once the required information is received, we will forward your enquiry to the relevant faculty who will communicate to you about the outcome of your application, possible research areas and supervisors.</p><br>
