Develop the skills to provide excellent midwifery care with AUT’s Bachelor of Health Science (Midwifery) degree.
AUT’s midwifery degree prepares you for a successful and rewarding career as a midwife, either as a hospital midwife or a lead maternity carer (a self-employed case loading midwife). Study midwifery at AUT’s South Campus in Manukau or via distance learning in Northland and Taranaki (through a live online platform and local classes).
Practical experience is a key part of the midwifery programme. You spend more than half of your time in clinical practice, developing the skills to become a confident and competent midwife. Throughout your studies you complete 2,400 practice hours, an experience that reflects the real world of midwifery.

Career Outcomes
- Job opportunities for midwives are good, especially in the Auckland region.
- Midwives work in the areas of pregnancy and childbirth, including the first six weeks after childbirth.
- They are employed in public hospital services, or set up in practice as a self-employed midwife in the community.

What will I learn?
If you choose to study midwifery after your first semester, you take the following courses in Semester 2:
Year 1
- Art and Science of Midwifery I
- Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- Developing Midwifery Practice
- Professional Frameworks for Midwifery Practice
Year 2 & 3
You further your understanding of the art, science and practice of midwifery and pharmacology. Courses also explore complications of childbirth, the newborn with special needs, women’s health
and factors that impact on midwifery. These skills prepare you for professional practice.
Year 4
You spend 80 percent of your time in practice placements with lead maternity carer midwives (self-employed case loading midwives) in the community and in primary and secondary maternity hospitals.
<ul>
<li>Are under the age of 20 years; and</li>
<li>Are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia; and</li>
<li>Don’t meet the University Entrance standard; and</li>
<li>Have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its equivalent overseas) and completed NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit or better. This should include at least 14 credits in each of 4 NCEA Level 2 subjects, at least 3 of which must be on the approved subject list; and</li>
<li>Meet the UE literacy and numeracy standards, or their equivalents; and</li>
<li>Have not completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school; or</li><br>
<li>Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also be selected into the programme for which they have applied.</li><br>
<p>*waived for Year 13 students at a New Zealand secondary school in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19.</p><br>
<p>Cost of applying for Discretionary Entrance There is a non-refundable assessment fee of $50.00.</p><br>
<h4>Minimum entry requirements</h4>
<p>University Entrance or equivalent</p>
<li>18 credits at level 3 in either Biology or Chemistry, and 16 credits in one subject from Classical Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, Art History, Media Studies, Social Studies, Te Reo Māori, Te Reo Rangatira, Business Studies, Economics, Physical Education</li>
<li>Must be capable of meeting Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCA Act) requirements and Children's Act 2014 including police clearance</li>
<li>Must hold a valid driver’s license</li>
<li>Applicants with English as a second or other language should have completed at least three years of schooling in New Zealand, or will be required to meet IELTS requirements</li>
