Foundation Studies Programme
Pathway course: direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or equivalent at University of Tasmania
Foundation Studies programmes are a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or equivalent. The programmes act as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or English language skills for tertiary study.
Foundation Studies programme
A Foundation Studies programme guarantees entry into a first-year UTAS undergraduate degree course^ provided the student:
- Completes all programme course requirements
- Achieves a minimum of 50% in all units, including English units
- Achieves the GPA required by the undergraduate degree course
- Achieves any additional English language proficiency required by the undergraduate degree course
Teaching style
Teaching is face to face and utilises a ‘blended’ approach in a classroom setting. Classes introduce and develop knowledge and skills, with follow-up activities such as discussion, investigation, assignments and appropriate web-based and digital resources.
Academic English
Foundation Studies programmes in Australia are bound by the accrediting authority (TEQSA) to include dedicated English studies to develop students’ English language proficiency required for entry into higher education studies.
The development of academic English skills is integrated into all activities. Individual projects, scaffolded learning and monitored small group discussions are encouraged, as well as tertiary skills such as listening to academic lectures, taking effective notes, reading academic texts in an effective and timely manner, and research and referencing skills.
Programme structure
From 2020, University of Tasmania International Pathway College will offer:
- Fast Track Foundation Studies Programme (4 units over 1 semester)
- Standard Foundation Studies Programme (8 units over 2 semesters)

Elective units
The number of elective units a student takes is determined by the Foundation Studies Programme they enrol in:
- Fast-track: Choose two elective units
- Standard: Choose four elective units
Each Foundation Studies programme can be undertaken in one of five content streams. In addition to core units, students select a number of elective units to fulfil the requirements for a stream.

Progressing to an undergraduate degree
Successful completion of a Foundation Studies Programme enables students to progress to an undergraduate degree course at the University of Tasmania.^ Each undergraduate degree requires applicants to have achieved a specific GPA score in the Foundation Studies Programme. The score varies from programme to programme.
Explanation of grade points
A grade point average (GPA) is calculated from the exam results of all units studied.
Intakes and Fees
Please note that textbook requirements for individual units are not included in the fee price. It is expected that students buy textbooks separately at an additional cost. Requirements are dependent on each course
Students must provide evidence of English language proficiency with an IELTS qualification, or agreed equivalent.

University of Tasmania
A quiet pursuit of the extraordinary.
Our story began 130 years ago, in a sandstone building overlooking Hobart.
Since those early days, with three lecturers teaching eleven students, our purpose has remained the same. Through academic excellence, we make our home, and the world, a better place.
Here, success takes a certain determination and imagination. With our isolated location and small population, we have always had to work differently. It’s what makes Tasmanians such creative thinkers and problem solvers. And it has seen us generate powerful ideas both for and from our island.
Here, we nurture our environment as it nurtures us.
Just as the winds and elements shaped this land, this land shapes everything we do. That’s why, today, we fight to protect our island home. As a university, we study and preserve some of the last great wilderness on our planet. From our island shores, our research extends to the great Southern Ocean and down to the Antarctic.
Here, everything is connected.
Literature students ponder the vast Southern Ocean. Scientists sing. Doctors design. Teachers become entrepreneurs. Architects devote themselves to sheltering the needy.
Our creative minds capture our unique land and seascapes, reminding us why our island is worth fighting for. They tell stories that resonate far away. Our institutions lead in medical, agricultural, social and environmental research. Our small setting allows us to test big ideas, leading to greater outcomes for the world.
We welcome all enquiring minds, from near and far, to join our pursuit. Every one of our students becomes part of a welcoming, collaborative community. And our whole island becomes their campus.
We are the University of Tasmania.

UP Education
A pathway to university and a strong future At UP Education we open the door to an English-language university education.
Our difference lies in the way we combine specialised university entrance programmes and English language courses with personalised care and support for students studying away from home and family.
Pathways to success
We help students find pathways to success by getting them into the right courses and institutes to achieve their goals.
Our New Zealand-based Foundation Studies programmes prepare students for degree-level study. We offer:
The University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies
AUT University Certificate in Foundation Studies
Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme
We now also offer bridging programmes in Australia through our partnership with the University of Tasmania.
So that our New Zealand students have the right level of English language proficiency to complete Foundation Studies, we offer English language tuition at our Auckland-based English School, and The Campbell Institute, based in Wellington and Auckland.
A student-focused approach
Our student-focused approach to education prepares learners for success at English-language university. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, and are provided with the latest mobile technology to help them navigate the digital world.
Teachers of the highest quality
Our caring, experienced teachers take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with the latest innovations in learning and technology. We also have an independent appraisal system for staff that keeps teachers at the top of their field, and ensures the best outcomes for our students.
Strict academic standards
We teach Foundation Studies programmes on behalf of our partner universities, so our courses are set at an approved standard so that students can be successful at university.
While our focus is on seeing our students continue on to our university partners in either New Zealand or Australia, our qualifications help students gain entry into tertiary institutions all over the world.
Well-rounded students
Students come to UP Education to be academically successful but they will also learn about other cultures, including the culture of New Zealand and Australia. Subjects like Geography, History and Culture and Society help students explore local culture beyond the classroom.
