Introduction to Communication in healthcare

Can you imagine what life would be like if you were deaf, had difficulty seeing, had very shaky writing and could not speak clearly? How do you communicate, especially if you cannot use technology? This situation is not uncommon but how do we respond to this?

This module explores barriers to communication and ways to overcome these. It looks at how to improve communication and at what supports are available. Communication is vital to wellbeing and must be done well.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Why is communication important?
  • Barriers to communication
  • Communicating well
  • Communication supports
  • Communicating with others

This module is delivered online and is learner driven. There is no maximum time required to complete the set learning hours.

Estimated number of hours: 3 – 5 hours theory and counts for 3 hours of professional development hours. No assessment is provided.

What will I learn?

This module explores barriers to communication and ways to overcome these. It looks at how to improve communication and at what supports are available.

The conditional offer for the Kalandra Education Level 3 programme will state at the time of commencing the Level 3 online programme with Kalandra you will have met the following requirements:
Have completed the Introduction to Healthcare module and assessment
Be able to provide evidence of a minimum 3 months work experience as a health care assistant at 20 hours minimum per week
Meet any other relevant entry criteria depending on your status - domestic student/PR or work visa holder. For work visa holders this will also including meeting English proficiency requirements.
