Master of Philosophy (Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences) Level 9

The Master of Philosophy enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT’s expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.


You complete an original thesis during this year of study.

AUT staff are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of topics.

Career Outcomes

The goals of the Master of Philosophy is to enable a student who has successfully completed approved and supervised research, to:

  • Critically investigate an approved topic of substance and significance
  • Demonstrate independent thinking
  • Demonstrate expertise in the methods of research and scholarship
  • Make a significant contribution to the subject area or discipline
  • Cogently present scholarly and publishable outcomes

What will I learn?

A graduate of the Master of Philosophy will undertake research and be able to:

a. Initiate, design, conduct, sustain, and report on a research project in a logical and critical manner

b. Critically reflect on and build in-depth understanding of knowledge and professional learning

c. Be self-motivated and demonstrate independent thinking within their field of study

d. Source, analyse, and evaluate information in relation to the philosophical basis, methodologies, and methods of their study

e. Demonstrate expertise in analysis of information using appropriate tools, technologies, and methods

f. Work autonomously, responsibly, and cooperatively with an awareness of integrity, truthfulness, and accountability

g. Consider ethical issues and apply this understanding to the making of ethical decisions in research

h. Present the outcomes of research with confidence, critical analysis, evaluation, originality, and engagement with academic debate

<p>In addition to the usual IELTS exam entry requirement, we will accept IELTS Indicator for entry to the June GIE programme intake, with IELTS results equivalent to the current GIE entry requirements.</p><br>
<p>The minimum IELTS Indicator requirements for entry to the GIE programme are:</p>
<li> Overall 5.5</li>
<li>Writing and Reading 5.5</li>
<li>Speaking and Listening 5.0</li>
<p>Students with qualifications from outside of New Zealand Applying on the basis of a qualification from another country? Use your official results for one of the following tests or qualifications to meet the English language requirements. Results can be up to two years old.</p>

<li>IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.</li>

<li>Grading scale for postgraduate qualification</li>
<li>Degree certificates (undergraduate and postgraduate)</li>
<li>1-2 page document (maximum) outlining your proposed research project</li>
<li>Curriculum vitae (CV)</li>
<li>If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of English Language proficiency – IELTS (Academic) test results or recognised equivalent. If your postgraduate study was completed in English within 3 years, this may be waived</li><br>
<p>Once the required information is received, we will forward your enquiry to the relevant faculty who will communicate to you about the outcome of your application, possible research areas and supervisors.</p><br>
