Master of Philosophy (Level 9)

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree.

The Master of Philosophy enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT’s expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

Master of Philosophy level 9 with 120 points

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree is a one-year, research-only master’s degree.

The Master of Philosophy enables you to expand your research capabilities by focusing on a particular area of interest, under the supervision of AUT’s expert academic staff. It can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

What will I learn?

Master of Philosophy is to enable a student who has successfully completed approved and supervised research, to:

      • Critically investigate an approved topic of substance and significance
      • Demonstrate independent thinking
      • Demonstrate expertise in the methods of research and scholarship
      • Make a significant contribution to the subject area or discipline
      • Cogently present scholarly and publishable outcomes

A graduate of the Master of Philosophy will undertake research and be able to:

a. Initiate, design, conduct, sustain, and report on a research project in a logical and critical manner

b. Critically reflect on and build in-depth understanding of knowledge and professional learning

c. Be self-motivated and demonstrate independent thinking within their field of study

d. Source, analyse, and evaluate information in relation to the philosophical basis, methodologies, and methods of their study

e. Demonstrate expertise in analysis of information using appropriate tools, technologies, and methods

f. Work autonomously, responsibly, and cooperatively with an awareness of integrity, truthfulness, and accountability

g. Consider ethical issues and apply this understanding to the making of ethical decisions in research

h. Present the outcomes of research with confidence, critical analysis, evaluation, originality, and engagement with academic debate.

<p>Apply if you:</p>
<ul>
<li>Are under the age of 20 years; and</li>
<li>Admission Key Facts:</li>
<li>Entry requirements Are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia; and</li>
<li>Don’t meet the University Entrance standard; and</li>
<li>Have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its
equivalent overseas) and completed NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit or better. This
should include at least 14 credits in each of 4 NCEA Level 2 subjects, at least 3 of which
must be on the approved subject list; and</li>
<li>Meet the UE literacy and numeracy standards, or their equivalents; and</li>
<li>Have not completed Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school; or</li>
<li>Have undertaken study in Year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school, but not
attempted to qualify for University Entrance</li>
<li>Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also be
selected into the programme for which they have applied.</li><br>
<p>Australian applicants most recent schooling must have been in New Zealand.</p><br>
<p>Applicants who have undertaken Year 13 beyond 1 June in any year may not normally be eligible to apply in the same year but may be considered for mid-year admission in the following year.*</p><br>
<p>*waived for Year 13 students at a New Zealand secondary school in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19.</p><br>
<p>Cost of applying for Discretionary Entrance There is a non-refundable assessment fee of $50.00.</p>
<p>Students with qualifications from outside of New Zealand Applying on the basis of a qualification from another country? Use your official results for one of the following tests or qualifications to meet the English language requirements.Results can be up to two years old.</p>
